Clothing & Equipment Suggestions

The information below is intended for those that have signed up for our expeditions, if you have reached this page in error - please click here to go back to our home page.

For those of you looking for Clothing & Equipment for the summer, here are a few economical options that might be of interest. Please make sure that the gear is appropriate for you on your particular trip. The guidelines in the Clothing and Equipment List should be your reference when borrowing or buying gear. Please take the time to read the list thoroughly. You can always give us a call or send us an e-mail with any questions (info@williwawadventures.com or 800.585.2523) – we are standing by.

Backpacks

Suitable for four to six days of backpacking. Internal frame packs should be near 4500-5500 cubic inches. External frame packs should be near 3500 cubic inches and come with accessory straps. If possible, we recommend an internal frame pack for comfort. If you are buying a new pack at a store, have the pack adjusted to fit you. If ordering online or mail-order, you can fit it yourself or your instructors would be happy to help fit it when you arrive.

The ones we have listed are reasonably priced and economical. It would be easy to spend 2-3 times these prices on a backpack and you might get slightly higher quality with a few more gadgets and pockets. That slight increase in quality is probably not worth the increase in price (at least for your first backpack).

We do not specifically endorse any of these packs – but these are links to backpacks that meet our size specifications and are listed for a reasonable price. Please note that some backpacks are sized (XS, S,M,L) and others are just one size. The manufacturer generally has a website with product sizing information.

Sleeping Bags

Your sleeping bag should be a medium weight mummy type bag with synthetic filling (or goose down) It should be no more than 3.5 pounds and be small & compact, no larger than a soccer ball when it is in it’s stuff sack. It should have a comfort rating of around 35°F for trips in MAINE & 25°F for trips in PNW.

These are conservative comfort ratings, taking into account lowest likely temperature scenarios in the mountains. If necessary, you could push 5-10°F for each of these comfort ratings based on personal preference and desired comfort.

Here are a few ideas, please double check to make sure these sleeping bags meet the weight and temperature rating guidelines:
